Detox in the Summer?

Detox in the Summer?

detox in the summerWhy would you want to detox in the summer? In 2012 I founded the 30 Day Whole Body Detox, the healthy, whole food detox that will nourish your body at the cellular level. I have been doing the program every spring since then and I encourage others to do the same. Yet there are always a few who choose to take on the challenge in the summer. Which is super challenging! I’m excited to share that I have found an alternative to the 30 Day Whole Body Detox that can be easily done in the summer and will allow you to enjoy some of the benefits of the 30 day program too.

Gratitude Tip: Our bodies are a miracle and every day there are processes and reactions that happen completely automatically. Taking care of our digestion and blood sugar levels is a form of gratitude for our bodies. Sometimes we forget how amazing our bodies really are. A short 7 day program can be great for the summer and allows us to focus on nourishing our cells rather than abusing them as we are apt to do in the summer.

If you follow me on social media, you know that I have been doing the new 7 Day MySmartStart challenge for a few days now. I did a trial run at the end of June when the program was first launched. After coming home from a 10 day vacation, I knew that I needed to get back on track before I left again for Salt Lake City next week. I decided to complete the MySmartStart again (with my hubby too!) and so far, so great!

detox in the summerWhat is it?

USANA® MySmart™Start* is a seven-day program designed to help you break your old unhealthy lifestyle habits and begin a new fitness regimen.’ It’s a simple program that comes in a box (see photo) and contains all that you will need to be successful. During the 7 days, you’re replacing two meals per day with the MySmartShakes (a choice of Whey, non-GMO Soy or Plant protein), plus eating one low-glycemic meal per day and two low glycemic snacks. The kit includes the new MySmartBars (10) so you’ll enjoy at least one of these a day. And finally you’ll be supplementing with the world-class USANA supplements in the convenient AM/PM packs known as the HealthPak.

What are some of the benefits?

Here’s what my clients and I have found:

  • Sugar cravings are gone (shakes and bars have zero added sugar)
  • Carb cravings are gone
  • Feeling full and satisfied after each meal
  • Releasing a few pounds
  • Clothes feel looser
  • More energy
  • Better sleep
  • Creating new habits
  • Breaking old habits that did not serve us
  • Mental clarity and focus
  • A sense of doing something great for our bodies
  • Easy program to follow

What is the value of the program?

The full kit includes:

  • 14 individual servings of the MySmartShakes. You can choose the regular kit to try all of the flavours or create a custom kit based on your needs. I choose the Plant and Soy bases.
  • 10 MySmartBars, my favorites are Berry Nutty and Dark Chocolate.
  • 7 days of the HealthPak AM/PM supplements, including the Multi-minerals, Anti-oxidants, Active Calcium Plus and the bonus Anti-Oxidant booster
  • 14 flavour optimizers. These can be added to your smoothies (optional). My favorites are dark chocolate and orange cream.
  • Bonus: 14 page guide that includes healthy, low glycemic recipes and program tips for success (when you order from me or any of our Holistic Lifestyle Creators tribe)
  • Bonus: Private FB group for those who have done the program or are going through it. Great for support and more fun recipe ideas.

Cost? Only $122.95 (no tax!) for the full seven days (CND and USD). To order, please connect directly with me, or visit my USANA website, – pricing on the site is retail however. Make sure you click on Become a Preferred Customer before placing your order to get that price.

Top 15 Reasons To Join Us for the 30 Day Whole Body Detox, 5th Edition

Top 15 Reasons To Join Us for the 30 Day Whole Body Detox, 5th Edition

Halfway Through the 30 Day Whole Body Detox,5th EditionToday is Day 15 for me (Julie), officially half way through the 30 Day Whole Body Detox. Our first group is on Day 9, and we had our 2nd group starting yesterday. As this is my 5th year doing the program, it’s been the easiest for me yet. Our program has grown exponentially this year and we have over 90 coaches in both the English and French program, Détox complète de 30 jours. Today I’ll be sharing with you the top 15 reasons why it’s a great idea to join us for the next group start of the 30 Day Whole Body Detox, 5th Edition.

Top 15 Reasons To Join Us for the 30 Day Whole Body Detox, 5th Edition

1.Liver love. Your liver is an amazing organ, and the primary organ of detoxification in our bodies. By reducing the liver loaders (alcohol, caffeine, toxins in our water, skin care etc.) our liver has the chance to work more optimally and this helps with hormone balance in our bodies. When we add the liver lovers, including milk thistle extract and n-acetyl cistine, our liver is even happier!

2. Real food. This is not a lemon/cayenne/maple syrup cleanse program. You eat real food. The program comes with 80+ recipes and as long as you stick to the program guidelines, you can create your own recipes too.

3. A supportive community. Our online Facebook community is very active and provides support for our detoxers. Recipe ideas are posted and encouraging words are shared.

4. Your family can be included. As this is a real food program, there is no need to cook for you and a separate meal for your family. In fact, many parents are including their children in the program by swapping out unhealthy food in the home and replacing it with healthier options.

5. It’s already gluten-free and dairy-free. Instead of having to worry about creating a meal that doesn’t include dairy or gluten, all of the recipes in the guide book are free of these, and many other common inflammatory foods.

6. Options for everyone. Do you eat as a vegan or vegetarian? We have a meal plan for you. Do you prefer to eat as an omnivore? We’re got you covered. Prefer a grain-free lifestyle? That’s included too.

Probiotic7. Digestive support. The foundation program includes USANA Probiotic, a dairy-free, sugar-free and gluten-free probiotic that is shelf stable at room temperature for up to two years. The strains used in this probiotic are clinically proven to survive the harsh acidic environment of the stomach and get to the small intestine where it’s needed. Optional products include Digestive Enzymes and Fibergy, not only for fiber but for pre-biotics which feed the probiotics in your gut.

8. Weekly meal planning and prep. Want to save time? This program has been set up to save you a lot of time during the week, with a Sunday prep day. It makes things a lot easier when you already know what’s for dinner every night.

9. Releasing of bloating and extra weight. Although this is not a weight loss program, we find that most people will release between 2 – 13 lb in 30 days. The biggest difference is usually in the waistline as bloating disappears. Even though I don’t need to lose weight, I’ve released 2 lb since I started.

10. No counting or portion control. There is no need to count calories with this program. You eat til you’re full, and stop. Since the recipes are full of fiber, you will feel fuller more quickly and stay feeling full. This also makes it possible for athletes to participate in the program, as they can choose larger portions to help meet their caloric needs, based on higher caloric expenditure.

11. After the first few days, you’ll feel great. Yes, the first few days can be tough, especially if you’re cutting out caffeine or you have been eating a lot of sugar and high glycemic foods, as your body will go through withdrawl. By the end of the first week, most people find they have a lot more energy and once you’re halfway through, it’s an amazing feeling.

12. Create new habits. Most clients find that when the 30 days are over, although they may reintroduce some things, like a morning cup of coffee, the habits they have created stick around for much longer than 30 days. Those who complete the program year after year find that it gets easier and easier, as their lifestyle has changed.

13. Give your body a break. One of our veteran detoxers noted that by doing this program, one month a year, every year for the past 5 years, she is likely slowing down the aging process by giving her body a break. It’s a good theory actually, because the only thing that causes aging is free radical damage. As we are doing this program, not only do we minimize free radical damage, but we are also repairing damage already done with optimal doses of antioxidants.

Hepa Plus (CA)/Hepasil DTX (US)

Hepa Plus (CA)/Hepasil DTX (US)

14. Optimal supplementation. The reason this program is so successful is because of the additional supplement support provided by the USANA products. The minerals & antioxidants (The Essentials) help with cleaning up of free radicals, the Biomega (omega 3 fish oil) is ideal for reducing inflammation and the Hepa Plus (liver support, Hepasil DTX in the US) support the liver with many of the dozens of co-factors needed for optimal liver function.

15. And finally, doing something for YOU!! This program is first and foremost about YOU. Taking one month out of 12 to focus on yourself and giving your body the best – because it deserve it! If you are in your BEST shape, then you can best serve all of the other people in your life. This program is so affordable for 30 days, and you get an incredible value for you dollar. That’s why we have people who repeat it year after year after year.

30 Day Whole Body Detox 2015 – Day 27

Square Foot Garden

Square Foot Garden

It’s already Day 27 and wow, this month really flew by! I barely even noticed this past week go by!! We have been blessed with an early taste of summer here in Southern Ontario, the temperature was 25C today with bright sunshine all day long. We had a chance to build our Square Foot Garden for my daughter and I today.  Well my hubby built it and we planted our seeds together. She was super excited to do this and I truly hope that things actually grow.

Lack of planning meant no juice today and there will be no juice for breakfast but I think I will make a green juice snack for the afternoon cause I miss it. Another fun thing I really enjoy now is sparkling water with lemon. Not something I drank before but I do like carbonation so this is a great alternative to cider on a hot day. I was also out of this today!

New smoothie for today:

Blueberry & Cherry Blitz!

  • Frozen organic blueberries
  • Frozen dark sweet cherries
  • 1/2 frozen banana
  • handful frozen kale
  • water
  • 1 scoop Fibergy
  • 2 scoops Nutrimeal Free

Blend at high speed. Enjoy in a glass with added USANA Probiotics and a dash of REV3 powder for taste!

Day 24 – No Excuses

It’ Day 24 of this year’s 30 Day Whole Body Detox. Tonight’s post is all about excuses.

green juice

I love my green juice!

Am I too busy to do the detox program? After the month that I have had I can guarantee you that you likely not. Being too busy to do this program is actually just another excuse. What I have found is when the desire is there and when you are ready to make a change, it’s easy to find the time. Over the past month, I have traveled to Las Vegas for 5 days, I am going to a two and a half day seminar tomorrow, and I have had one of the busiest Aprils in my entire USANA career. I never actually thought that I would be able to stick to the program as well as I have considering all of the things that have been on my plate, but I made it happened. Amazingly, I even found the time to start a new juicing habit. Do I make green juice every single day? No. But I do find the time to make it green juice 2 to 3 times per week.

stir fry for the 30 Day Whole Body Detox

Simply stir fry with quinoa

The reason it’s possible to be successful on this program even if you are really busy is because many of the recipes are easy to make. Also with our weekly prep download you can actually set yourself up for success on a Sunday evening so that your week is simple to organize and you don’t have to worry about making dinner when you come home because you are often just reheating rice and stir frying some vegetables.

In May we have another group of people starting the detox together. Primarily, our juicing gurus Dieter and Rebecca, authors of the International Bestselling book Juice Your Way To Health will be leading a group starting on May 5th. Not to worry if you’re not prepared to start right away, we have another group starting on May 11th. From what I hear there may even be a small group starting in June.

So what I asked you tonight is to look at your excuses and really determine whether the reason you’re not doing the detox program is a real reason or if it’s simply an excuse. What do you want your health to look like for the rest of 2015? Do you want to be the healthiest version of yourself? Are you ready to feel the best that you have ever felt? If the answer is yes then I am so excited to include you in our May detox program. You can order your program here. If you have questions or you are not sure if this program is best for you please connect with me and I will answer all of your questions.

30 Day Whole Body Detox 2015 – Day 10

Ready to juice!

Ready to juice!

Double digits today! Already a third of the way through the program and things are going super for me and my first group of clients who started on the same day! The second group is only four days in so I will get some feedback this weekend. I have one more group starting on Tuesday the 21st and I have only 2 spots left, as there is a limited number of people I can coach at the same time and we’re pretty close to that number. Please let me know asap if you want one of those spots, if not, the next group I will be coaching starts on May 4th.

Started with another green juice today, a combo of different fruits and veggies I had in my fridge. It’s been a good busy week for business as you can probably imagine so I haven’t been out to the grocery store since the weekend. Luckily, there is a lot of cabbage left so I made another batch of the Super Savour Cabbage Salad by Linda Heredia, RHN for dinner, served with a Sol Cuisine vegan burger. They also have soy free options, but for me, I am ok with a bit of soy in my diet.2015-04-16 18.12.58

This afternoon I watched the episode of The Dr. Oz Show with my neighbors. Dr. Oz had a great way of explaining how the liver works and why Hepa Plus (Hepasil in the US) can help with optimal liver function. I love how he keeps things so simple. Hepa Plus is one of the foundation products in our program. Did you catch the episode? There were also some great tips on being healthy on a budget. The video will be posted tomorrow and I will share it with you on the blog. See below for today’s special on Hepa Plus. Expires Thursday April 16th at 10 pm EST. info (a) to order.

Next week is the biggest detox challenge ever! I will be heading to Las Vegas for 6 days! I want to show you guys that travelling is no excuse and that you can do this program anywhere. And that you can have lots of fun without alcohol. I am going for business, mixed with pleasure of course, so I will just have to make different choices.

30 Day Whole Body Detox 2015 – Day 7

Finished week 1! The feedback from our early-bird group has been amazing. Everyone has really been enjoying the program and the new recipes that we have added. I have lots of energy and no sugar cravings. It’s very liberating actually! And it saves money too, no stops at Shoppers for a dark chocolate Lindt bar or Eggies (which are gone! phew!!).

No bake bars

No bake bars

I finally made my favorite snack bars from the program today. Gorete’s recipe is a fan favorite for sure and I usually make these even when I’m not doing the detox program.  It does look like I ate some already but I just couldn’t get it to spread across the pan completely. This is before I frozen them. We eat them right from the freezer. Delicious!! A batch only lasts 2-3 days.

Before I mixed them together.

Before I mixed them together.

I also made a totally delicious discovery today. I had leftovers from the cabbage salad I made last night, which was awesome already. I roasted some chickpeas as a side. Well, let me tell you that adding these two together was AMAZEBALLS!! Loved it. Hubby was asking for me to do this combo again. I will for sure!!

Even though I have done this three times before, I am learning new things and trying new recipes. And that’s what I like about it. You learn new recipes to add to your weekly meal planning, even after the program. And guess what? It’s not hard to do!

Tickets are on sale for our live event on Tuesday May 5th. Get your tickets here:

One last thing to share, a few things I have noticed is that I have stopped feeling hungry in the evening and I don’t wake up hungry. I am actually doing intermittent fasting for 12 hours a day, which is great for your body. There are so many benefits to this program – what’s keeping you from joining us? I’d love to find out, you can email me at info (a)

Mango-Peanut Stir Fry (Recipe)

Winter weather always makes me more creative! I love experimenting in the kitchen, and 3 out of 4 times, the recipes are tasty. This is a new creation that I have only made once, so the measurements are approximate. A stir fry doesn’t really require precise measurements, so it should be simple to recreate in your own kitchen.

2015-01-18 18.03.29Mango-Peanut Stir Fry

Serve 4

  • 2 cups of cooked brown rice (½  cup per person) – heated
  • 1 head of broccoli, chopped into bite sized pieces
  • 1-2 ribs of celery, chopped
  • ½ large red onion, or 1 medium, chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic, chopped
  • 1 ½ cups of snap peas, snapped in half
  • Red, orange or yellow sweet peppers, approx. 1 ½ total, chopped
  • Thai peanut sauce, gluten-free (if required)
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • Salt (sea or Himalayan), pepper and dried coriander
  • 1 fresh mango, peeled and sliced into small chunks
  • Optional: chicken or lean beef (palm sized portion)

  1. In a large frying pan, melt the coconut oil on medium-high heat.
  2. Add onions and garlic. Cook until the onion is translucent.
  3. Add broccoli, celery, snap peas and peppers.
  4. Drizzle with Thai peanut sauce (approx. 1 tbsp).
  5. Cook until broccoli is bright green and gives when you push it with the spatula.
  6. Season with salt, pepper and coriander to taste.
  7. Divide the rice into bowls, approx. ½ cup per person. Add ¼ of the stir fry mixture on top.
  8. Add 5-6 chunks of fresh mango on top. Add chicken or beef if using.
  9. Drizzle with additional peanut sauce.

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight glass container for 3 days in the fridge. Recommend storing rice and stir fry mixture separately.

Easy ‘Cheesy’ Weeknight Pasta (GF, vegan)

There are nights when you’re not really sure what to make and you just stare at the food in your fridge and pantry. This simple pasta dish was created on one of those nights.

2014-09-22 18.14.46Easy weeknight pasta, GF, vegan
Yield: 4 servings

2 cups favorite gluten-free pasta
1 cup green veggie: edamame, peas or broccoli (chopped)
1 cup raw cashews, soaked in water for at least 2 hours
1 cup almond milk or coconut milk or water
2 tbsp nutritional yeast
1/4 tsp sea salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
Hot sauce or chillies to taste (optional)

1. Cook pasta according to package directions.
2. Add veggies to boiling water in last 2-3 minutes to cook with the pasta.
3. In a high speed blender, make sauce. Combine raw cashews (drained), almond milk and nutritional yeast and blend until smooth. The longer you soak the cashews, the smoother it will be.
4. Drain pasta and veggies.
5. In a large sauce pan or in empty pasta pot, gently heat the sauce until it starts the thicken. Add pasta and veggies. If sauce is too thick, simply add water.
6. Season with salt and pepper. Add hot sauce to taste.

With so many simple substitutions, this is easy to make with ingredients you have on hand. I tend to keep a bag of raw cashews and nutritional yeast in my pantry at all times.

Never tried a vegan ‘cheese’ before? Let me know how you enjoyed this one!

8 Reasons Why I am Grateful for Kelly’s Bake Shoppe

It’s no secret that I love Kelly’s Bake Shoppe here in Burlington, Ontario – especially if you follow me on Instagram. I like to joke that my Instagram feed is full of green smoothies, photos of my daughter, and Kelly’s cupcakes. And photos of my daughter with Kelly’s cupcakes. I wanted to share with you why I am so very grateful for this wonderful bakery and the two women who started it, Kelly Childs and Erinn Weatherbie – an amazing mother & daughter team.

8 Reasons Why I am Grateful for Kelly’s Bake Shoppe

2014-02-14 13.09.40Delicious, gluten-free vegan treats that are actually healthy and (mostly) guilt-free! Since I discovered that I am truly gluten-intolerant over two years ago, it has been such a wonderful blessing to be able to eat amazing desserts again. The bakery is also peanut-free which is great for those who have allergies, like one of my daughter’s friends.

2013-10-31 15.09.08The friendly, helpful staff who treat us like family. True, we are there several times a month so it’s easy to recognize us, but they treat every client the same way. Always a warm smile and hugs too! It’s such a wonderful environment to visit and we enjoy meeting friends there for a cupcake date.

Erinn, Kelly and JulieThe incredible example of female entrepreneurship that Kelly & Erinn have shown. Two women, mother & daughter, starting an alternative bakery (vegan!) in the downtown core and within their first year, you can see their success as soon as you walk in the door. They have also taken great care in hiring amazing people to work at the bakery which means that they can actually step away from the store and take vacations once in a while. That is the sign of true leadership, when you can be away and things run just as smoothly as if you were there.

Happy Birthday Dan!

Happy Birthday Dan!

We now have a go-to place for our celebrations. Whenever we have a birthday or special occasion (or if someone needs to be cheered up, for example when my daughter broke her arm), Kelly’s is the place to go. Our friends bring us cupcakes when they visit. My husband brings me treats to congratulate me when I have a business success. And anything goes because I can safely eat anything on the menu.

2014-07-04 12.16.55The value of the food. They have a saying at their sister restaurant, Lettuce Love Café, ‘Good food ain’t cheap and cheap food ain’t good’. This goes for the bakery as well. Using the best ingredients leads to the best products. And it’s worth it every time.

2014-06-21 19.33.55The Mile High Brownie. Nuff said.

Their social media skills. I’ve learned quite a bit from how Kelly & Erinn have been using Facebook and Instagram to build their tribe and it’s really refreshing to see a brand that makes you feel good when it shows up on your feed. Not to mention all of the great content and recipe on both their blogs. I guarantee you that I will be on board to help with their social media campaign when their book is released in a year or so.

2014-07-20 14.53.12

Kelly’s Tribe

And finally, it’s a business built on LOVE. You can tell that there is so much love in everything they do, from the beautiful poem that Ken (Kelly’s husband) painted on the ceiling of the bakery (look up next time you walk in), to the attitude of the staff and the loyalty of the customers. Imagine a world where all businesses lead with love!

30 Day Whole Body Detox 2014 – Day 27

A little wrinkle in my last few days of the 30 Day Whole Body Detox – I spent a few hours this morning in the Emergency Room for an infection in my toe. I won’t get into all of the details but the antibiotic treatment I started a week ago wasn’t working (after trying to heal the infection naturally). There are certainly times when medicine is our friend and I am very grateful for antibiotics in this case. A round of IV antibiotics and everything should be all clear. This also means a lot of probiotics for me as well. The good thing is that I have been taking really good care of myself so my body is working optimally to fight the infection. This is also the reason why I haven’t been able to do much exercise during the 30 days.

forks over knivesAs I was up very early this morning, I ended up taking most of the day off and resting. It gave me the opportunity to watch a documentary that I had not seen before, Forks over Knives, ‘Prevent and Reverse Disease with a Whole Food, Plant Based Diet’. I’m sure many of you have seen it before and I don’t know how I missed it.  It is an excellent documentary that makes a great case for a plant based lifestyle. I have been a vegetarian since I was 16 years old and have been getting closer to a totally plant based diet over the past year or so. I was inspired by the great food from Lettuce Love Café and the amazing treats from Kelly’s Bake Shoppe, both are gluten-free and vegan. I know this might not be the popular opinion but I am really starting to wonder if we do need to eat animals to live, as a society. It’s a bit of a vicious circle that involves marketing, farm subsidies, lifestyle habits and behavioral patterns. Some of the dietary choices we have made for our daughter aren’t very popular either (she doesn’t drink milk or eat gluten) but I am confident in my research on the topic, and we know that she is eating a very healthy and varied diet compared to what many three year olds are eating.

Lots of veggies! This year, we offered a vegan option for the first time. If you wanted to give a plant based lifestyle a try for 30 days, with amazing food and recipes to go along with it, you could certainly give it a try! It’s the beginning of an awareness of how our food choices impact the planet we live on. Why not have a smaller environmental  footprint for a month?
