The 30 Day Whole Body Detox – Day 9

I may have gotten over the hump with my caffeine withdrawal. Can I hear a cheer ?! Headaches have been gone for a few days now and my sciatica is lessening. I am left with a dull lower backache but nothing I can’t tolerate. Again this is my body telling me I am tired and I am grateful that I am aware of the underlying fatigue my body was experiencing. I couldn’t feel it while I was wired on coffee.

I must say I am still shocked at how addictive caffeine can be. As the most widely consumed stimulant in the world, it sure packs a punch when we try to remove it from our diet. And for this reason I have decided to not go back to it. My adrenals don’t need the extra stress that my daily coffee has placed on them for the last decade. I am excited to experience my energy without the help of a stimulant. The real “Energizer Bunny” is returning!
Meanwhile I am enjoying the whole foods and the supplements I am nourishing my cells with. My adrenals will heal in no time.

Part of the joy of this program is that it allows us the time to create easy dishes with simple ingredients in just minutes with what we have in our fridge. I am inspired and it’s so zen to me to spend time in the kitchen creating simple dishes.

Today for lunch I decided to fill a Portobello mushroom cap with a tomato sauce I made for my family featuring red peppers, more mushrooms and sweet onion cooked in olive oil. I baked it at 450 degrees Farenheit for 15 minutes. It was juicy and meaty.

This program has made me  fall in love even more with avocado. We need our good fats. My favourite treat is the occasional gluten-free toast that  I spread  with half of a perfectly ripe avocado topped with sea salt.

I look back at a decade ago  and this would not have been the types of food I would crave. But the longer I am on this journey of optimal health the closer I get to feeling like my best self all while helping others do the same.

With Day 9 almost complete I am happy to go into my second week with more energy and with a renewed sense of excitement that my body, specially my adrenals, are receiving the attention they need to work optimally.

 

My AHA Moment

Just when I thought I had it all figured out when it came to cutting out caffeine for thirty days ! Today I had an epiphany.

What I absolutely love about this program is the ability to not only raise self-awareness but also help us recognize potential life changing information about our physical well-being. We may discover an allergy to gluten or a passion for cooking. For me it was the realization that my Naturopath was right all along. She had stressed the importance for me to cut out my caffeine habit.

Two years ago I visited Naturopathic Dr. Olinca Trejo with symptoms of fatigue and sudden weight gain. We ran some tests and discovered my cortisol levels were at rock bottom upon wakening and it was likely my adrenals were exhausted. I was given strict orders to eat no sugar and follow other nutritional guidelines similar to those in this detox. One big item to check off my list was to remove caffeine as coffee can be taxing to our adrenals. These round disk-shaped organs sit atop each kidney in the areas of the lower back. A single cup of coffee stimulates our adrenal glands and are responsible for secreting the hormone adrenaline, which rapidly prepares your body to spring into action in a stressful situation. For many people this is not a problem but for some , over time it can lead to exhausted adrenals . A caffeine addiction can not only lead to weakened adrenals but as well it can weaken the entre area around them. You guess it…the lower back.

Yesterday was my first official day without any caffeine. By late afternoon I began to feel sciatic pain, also known as sciatica , in my back and going down both my legs. I do not have a history of sciatica. This pain continued throughout the night and woke me many times. This morning it was so bad I finally took two Advil to relieve the pain. My body had spoken to me once again.

I finally understood how important it was for me to say goodbye to caffeine. Now that I am continuing to rid my body of caffeine I realize how coffee has been a highly addictive stimulant that has managed to cover up my exhaustion. I can now begin to heal my body naturally and my hope is that my hormonal health will be restored as well as my natural energy rhythms. I have also struggled with extra pounds these last few years. This may help finally release that weight.

Life After Coffee

Thank you to the Founder of the 30 Day Whole Body Detox Julie Boyer for inviting me to be the guest blogger while I take on yet another 30 Day journey with this fabulous program. This is my 5th time coaching and doing this program and I have looked forward to taking the time out every spring for some self-care and being conscious of what I put in my mouth. The detox has gotten easier every year and this is all due to the lifelong habits I have created along the way.

This year I wanted to challenge myself and really confront head on this fear I had of giving up coffee for 30 days. After all, the things we hold on to very tightly are maybe the very things we need to let go of.  During my four previous experiences with my 30 Day Whole Body Detox I would replace coffee with the USANA Rev 3 Surge pack, which is a clean source of caffeine from white, green and black tea and includes nutrients and ingredients like Korean Ginseng and Rhodiola.

Unlike 90 percent of the population who consume caffeine daily I spent most of my  life caffeine free. Somehow I never picked up the morning coffee ritual until I was 40 and a first time entrepreneur.   I had managed to live life without coffee until then and so my occasional cup of java turned into a full-fledged dependency… or so I thought.

What if I didn’t need coffee to start my day ? I wanted to experience my pre-coffee days again when I had plenty of energy  and was even nicknamed the “Energizer Bunny” by friends and family.

And so day one arrived and I temporarily ended my love affair with coffee and went cold turkey. I was prepared for the worse as I had heard from many people that caffeine withdrawal could be very uncomfortable. Six hours after what would be my daily caffeine indulgence of two cups of coffee,  the symptoms showed up in full force. I did say I liked a good challenge !

I felt sleepy and so sluggish and experienced a massive headache. I also felt unmotivated and slightly depressed and had to nap several times. The morning of day two was much the same except for the headache.  The sleepiness and fatigue made it tough and after consulting with Julie Boyer I followed her suggestion and chose to ease the symptoms with one half of a REV 3 Surge Pack which is equivalent to a half cup of coffee.  I did this for three days and today I can say as I write this I am caffeine free  for the first time in a decade !

This program is so much more than a spring detox where you create new lifestyle habits and take care of yourself for 30 days. It is an opportunity to recognize our fears and our misconceptions and the self-doubt we have. When I look back now,  I had expected that going caffeine free would mean days and perhaps weeks of discomfort  . But our bodies are remarkable machines designed to do the very things that we take for granted. I look forward to waking up tomorrow bright-eyed without any help from my morning cup of coffee. I am not saying I won’t return to coffee but I know now tat when that day comes  it’s not because I need to have my coffee. It’s because I choose to enjoy a warm cup of coffee on a cool sunny morning on my patio.

Mar 5, 2016This is the 5th year that I have completed the 30 Day Whole Body Detox. And you can see from my photos that even though I had no intention or desire to lose any weight, I released 3 pounds. And I ate real food every day, without going hungry and without counting calories or points. You may look at these photos and think that I’m naturally thin and that losing weight comes easily to me. And you would be wrong.

Never assume you know someone else’s story. We know the saying, never judge a book by it’s cover, but do we live this way? We see photos or read about someone else’s success and often our default is to believe that it was easy for them or they have advantages that we don’t. In my experience, that’s not what I have seen. Everyone one who accomplished any goal, whether it be releasing weight or achieving a business milestone did so with hard work and a shift in mindset.

I felt that it was important to share my full story with you so that you might understand why I am so passionate about the 30 Day Whole Body Detox program.

In high school, I was overweight. Not in a serious way, but I had rolls on my stomach and never really felt comfortable in my body, as is the same with most teenage girls. I was blessed with very large breasts, which I found very uncomfortable and had a lot of trouble finding clothing that fit – buttons on blouses would pop open and I had to shop in specialty stores to find a bathing suit that fit. I wanted to wear bikinis like my friends, so I did, but I never felt comfortable or attractive. My self worth was attached to whether or not some guy was interest in me – and when you have large breasts, that attention comes easily. But it wasn’t healthy and I didn’t have a lot of respect for myself and my body. And even though I was an athlete (swimmer) all through high school, my body remained the same (please forgive the permed hair in the photo).

Yes, I struggled with my weightWhen I went to university, I studied Kinesiology and was surrounded by fit athletes. I was active but not on any varsity teams so I wasn’t very fit and again, still overweight. I still hadn’t accepted my body yet and struggled to fit in in a world of athletes and jocks – which I was neither. I found solace in music and choir (music was my minor). After graduation, I soon found myself working for New Balance Canada, yes the footwear and sporting goods company.  The blessing that came from that experience is that during this time I did actually learning how to run again (overcame knee issues that had plagued me since I was 12 – that’s another story) and I discovered and feel in love with triathlon. However, my large breasts were really uncomfortable when I ran, so in 2000 I had a breast reduction – best decision ever. The surgeon didn’t ask me to lose any weight before the surgery (which often is the case with a reduction) because he knew I was training as a competitive triathlete and was very fit, so my weight (even though I was overweight) was ok. The picture from 2000 is from my first honeymoon (yes, I’ve been married before) and when I found it in the album, there was a post-it note covering my stomach! I didn’t want anyone to see my rolls. I had forgotten how self-conscious I was.

Julie Boyer IronmanFast forward to 2006, when I had completed one Ironman triathlon and was training for my 2nd one in Switzerland. As you can see, I believe I may be the biggest I have ever been. Even though I was training anywhere from 1 to 6 hours a day. Again, I had accepted this as my size, since at this point I was 30 years old and had been pretty much the same since high school. When I share the photo from the race finish, it’s unrecognizable as me. What I didn’t realize is that in order for my shape to change, I really had to change what I was putting in my mouth and get rid of my serious carb and sugar cravings for good.

That’s the year I started in my USANA business and started to learn about low glycemic (GI) eating. In between Ironman 2006 and 2008,  I changed the way I was fueling my body (no portion control or counting calories) and released 20 pounds, dropped 2 sizes and felt absolutely amazing completing that 3rd Ironman triathlon. Along the way, I created different lifestyle change programs for my clients to help them to duplicate my success, based on the optimal health triad of Regular Exercise, Whole Food, Low GI Eating and Optimal Supplementation. And my clients had a lot of success. But my earlier programs did rely more on meal replacement shakes for 1 or 2 meals a day and I wanted to teach people how to eat real food and cook. And that’s when the 30 Day Whole Body Detox program was born.

The program was designed to help clients to get rid of carb and sugar cravings, all while eating real food and not having to worry about portion sizes or counting. By doing it as a gentle detox, and removing the liver loaders such as alcohol and caffeine, the results have been amazing. The first year I released 9 lb to my surprise, as I found out that I was intolerant to gluten and by removing it from my diet, my body naturally release weight. Every year since then, I would gain 2-3 lb over the holidays and then release 4-7 lb during the detox program. With the exception of this year, where I didn’t gain any weight over the holiday season, so when I started the program I had zero intention of releasing any weight. Yet somehow I did. Totally strange to me, except that what I have realized is that if you nourish your cells with optimal supplements, support your digestion with probiotics and fiber and take care of your liver with a liver support supplement, you body becomes more efficient as using the nutrition from your food and releasing what it doesn’t need.

A friend of mine posted that she feels that the only way possible to release weight would be to starve herself and work out til she throws up. And this breaks my heart, as it’s just not true – in fact doing either or both of those things would not release weight at all and would create a state of starvation in your body, which means that weight loss would be almost impossible. The 30 Day Whole Body Detox is truly a lifestyle program – you don’t have to stop eating this way after you’re done the 30 days – and most clients don’t. They may decide to reintroduce alcohol and caffeine, and perhaps they will choose to include some gluten or dairy in their diet, but many don’t. And we do this program together once a year, in the spring, as a tune up. We teach you new habits for life so that when you release weight, it’s gone and doesn’t come back. And since you’re cooking and eating real food, it’s easy to continue.

Surprising Detox Results After 27 Days!

This year I started the program early, on Tuesday March 29th with was the live kick off event for the 30 Day Whole Body Detox, 5th edition. It wasn’t too difficult of a transition for me, since I only had to cut out the Rev3 (caffeine) and a small amount of sugar. I chose not to let myself have any dark chocolate dessert recipes until I had completed 21 days of no added sugar at all. I have found that works best for me. I have really enjoyed so many of the new recipes from this year’s guidebook, and as a wonderful treat, Made with Love, the vegan, gluten-free cookbook written by Kelly Childs & Erinn Weatherbie (co-owners of Kelly’s Bake Shoppe here in Burlington, and program contributors) was also released at the beginning of the month which has added even more recipe options to the program.

I’ve had some challenges along the way – my child was home sick for 4 days, then my husband got bronchitis and last week I severely sprained my ankle on Tuesday and it’s still healing so cooking (and any exercise) has been a challenge. Imagine my complete and utter surprise when I stepped on the scale and I saw 132 lb. I was curious about my weight because when I put on my blue dress (see photo) yesterday, it didn’t seem as form fitting as it was even in January. My lowest weight as an adult was in 2008 when I was training for Ironman Arizona was 134 lb, and I was super fit. Here we are, 6 years and one child later, and I’m at 132 lb!?! Totally blew me away. Then I recalled what Dr. Karen Wolfe has said at our MySmartFoods product launch yesterday (more about those products in another post), that when we feed our bodies with whole, real food and are well nourished at a cellular level with USANA supplements we release fat naturally. And that’s what the detox program is all about. You remove all of the things that don’t nourish your body, add so many things that DO and you release weight naturally.  Was I looking to lose weight? Not at all. Was a surprise to lose 3 lb? Yes. And I’m not sure that I will stay at this weight, which is fine cause I think I dropped a size and don’t really want to go shopping ;-). An Amazing Community of Detoxers

#30daywholebodydetoxThere is something very powerful about creating a community of like-minded individuals. And for the 5th edition of the 30 Day Whole Body Detox, we have done just that. Last year we started a private group for coaches and their clients to stay connected during the detox program. And it was a great place to get support and ask your questions. This year, the community has grown very quickly and there are so many people who are engaged and posting – and it’s only the first day of the program!

A great way to see what we are talking about is the check out the hashtag #30daywholebodydetox on Facebook and Instagram  – you can even do a Google search to see what comes up. There are so many beautiful images of the tasty recipes that you can eat during the program. Being a whole food program, there are many options on what to eat, whether you are a vegetarian or vegan, or you enjoy eating meat. I am inspired daily by what others are posting. I have officially finished my first week of the program and am on Day 8! I am really feeling a lift in my energy and woke up feeling so rested this morning. There are many wonderful side effects of the program that’s for sure!

Four years ago I had a vision of a program that would change people’s lives through food and proper supplementation. I wanted a program that could easily be shared with other USANA associates, that they could also use with their clients. I also wanted an opportunity for other wellness professionals, who may not have already been associated with USANA or have a detox program of their own, a turn-key program that they could use as a compliment to their business. It’s day 6 of the 30 Day Whole Body Detox and we have at least 25 people starting together on Monday April 4th. And here in Ontario, Canada, we are covered in a blanket of snow. Adding an extra layer of challenge to a spring detox, that’s for sure! I’m encouraging everyone to make green juice and eat lots of salads so that we can quickly get back to spring weather. What do you love most about spring?

Gratitude Tip: Being grateful no matter the weather can be a challenge! Especially when you’re awaiting a snow storm on April 3rd. As I have shared many times before, it’s not that we have to be grateful for everything that happens, but simply to find gratitude no matter the situation. The sun is shining through my office window as I type this. And it is really beautiful outside (even though it looks and feels like February). We had the opportunity for a nice warm fire yesterday afternoon, and perhaps we have enough wood for another one tonight. 

green juice, julie boyer, detoxThis morning I am drinking a green juice that I made myself. I dusted off the juicer that I bought off Kijiji last year – I used it throughout the summer but put it away in the fall and winter. My taste buds have changed, which is a good thing! The same juice I made last year, that is a 60/40 veggie and fruit mix, tastes really sweet to me now. I’ll have to adjust the recipe next time. I am already feeling really great and full of energy. This year has been the easiest yet, because so many of my habits have changed over the past four years, that when it’s time to focus on the detox, there isn’t a lot that has to change.

This program has also influenced my family. Yesterday my husband made an amazing Buddha bowl style stir fry, with yellow & orange peppers, carrots and mango on a bed of brown rice, topped with avocado, cilantro, sunflower seeds and a bit of tamari and olive oil. It was a delicious and creative blend and I loved it. Our daughter ate a full bowl as well, which surprised us both, as she usually prefers her veggies raw. Seems like everyone’s taste buds have changed in the past year, for the better. It’s a lot of fun doing this as a family and sharing our meals together.

stir fry, detox, julie boyerI am starting to understand more and more why some people get angry about sugar, and how it’s in everything. I try not be judgmental when I see parents choosing to feed their children sugar and I even let my daughter have some. When I look back on the 2 previous winters before this one (which was relatively mild), I basically coped with the cold weather by feeding myself sugar, on top of a very healthy diet – you know, that 10% of ‘cheat’? And not only did I feed myself sugar, my family was eating it too. Our young daughter was addicted to sugar too. And the only reason I can really ‘see’ now how much it was affecting our family is that I have this year as a comparison. We’ve all transitioned to the detox well. My daughter forget about her Easter candy within two days and even my husband has left it alone.

There’s a story I haven’t shared with many people, and I’m going to share it here with you today because I want to demonstrate how our children will do what we do and not what we say. For many, many years I was addicted to Diet Coke (yes Coke, not Pepsi). I would start my day with a DC, usually by about 9 am and I would have a second can in the afternoon. That would be it as I would limit myself to two cans a day. My second can was usually accompanied by a chocolate bar or sweet snack. This was early in my USANA business, and I figured that this was my only bad habit, so it was ok. But I knew that drinking chemicals was not good for my body or my cellular nutrition. Yet I couldn’t stop! I would stop buying it from the grocery store and then I would end up walking to the corner story to get it. I spent thousands of dollars stopping a gas stations for a cold CAN (had to be the can) of Diet Coke. I was truly behaving like an addict. And do you want to know what made me stop? When my daughter was about 14 months old, I had been playing with her on her playmat and was about to open my DC. She picked it up and pretended to drink it. And at that moment, I quit. That was it for me. I was not going to teach my child to drink soda of any kind. That was 4 years ago – a few months before I launched the first detox program. And I haven’t touched it since. Not even one glass.

And it had to be simple enough that most people, whether they had any experience in the kitchen or not, could be successful. Four years and five editions later, we’ve created just that.

Gratitude Tip: The best way to be successful is to work with people who have different strengths then you do, and allow them to contribute what they do best. This program is a collaboration between more than 25 people, with different areas of expertise in nutrition and wellness. What I am most grateful for is that almost everyone I asked to contribute said yes. That’s not always going to be the case when you’re building a team or putting together a project. For every person that supports you and joins your team, make sure they know how much you appreciate their contribution and express your gratitude freely.

Back to the program, I also felt it was important to focus on creating new habits instead of weight loss, because when we focus our success on losing weight and we don’t achieve the number on the scale, it can be very difficult to feel successful – even though we may have completely changed our eating habits and given up caffeine & alcohol for a month! The program includes a pre and post detox checklist where you can record your starting weight and a few measurements, but that’s only the first few lines of a 2 page questionnaire. We do our best to measure what cannot be easily quantified, such as quality of sleep or mood.

The 30 Day Whole Body Detox program doesn’t apply to them because it’s just how they live. And as I start Day 3 of the program for the 5th time, I’m starting to feel like one of those people. We have veteran detoxers who have been doing the program since the beginning – and guess what?  We’ve all changed our habits! Every year the program gets easier and easier to do because we’ve created a lifestyle change. I LOVE THIS!!!! It doesn’t mean that we don’t enjoy food or have fun on special occasions, it’s simply that we make different choices and know how to get back on track very quickly now. And I want you to know that even if it’s your very FIRST year doing the program, you will create new habits that will support you until next spring, when you can become a veteran detoxer too.

Did I step on the scale two days ago? Yes, to record my weight for my questionnaire. Do I have any weight to lose? Nope. Am I excited about this? YES! This is the first year I haven’t eaten Easter chocolate and gained a few pounds in the months leading up to the detox. I am excited to just be doing the program to enjoy all of the new recipes and focus on trying new things for a month.

Live Launch of the 30 Day Whole Body Detox 5th Edition

30 day whole body detox Last night was the LIVE launch of the 5th edition of the 30 Day Whole Body Detox. It was thrilling to see something I have envisioned for the last 4 years come to life! We’ve done events to launch the program every year, and this one was truly the most amazing – yet!

Our event took place at the Burlington Golf and Country Club, an ideal location overlooking Lake Ontario, and the sun was setting as we started the event – a great atmosphere for a seminar. For those who weren’t able to attend, we had a LIVE stream broadcasting across the globe! A huge thank you to Dieter Staudinger who had the vision to make the live stream happen. This meant that the event was also recorded, so you’ll see some of the videos on our website in the future.

My role was to share the details of the 30 Day Whole Body Detox program, the story behind the program and what’s new and exciting for 2016. The room was filled with many first time guests who had never done the program before, so there was a lot of information to be absorbed! Dr. Erica Mattia did an amazing job of sharing why we choose the USANA product line as our partner for this program and how each of the products is important during the program. Following Erica were our juicing gurus, Dieter & Rebecca, who shared their experience doing a 40 day juice cleanse and 8 reasons why it’s important to adding fresh vegetable juice to your diet and lifestyle. The juice chapter in the Recipe & Guidebook was added thanks to Dieter & Rebecca.

Following a short break, we welcomed our keynote speaker, Dr. Olinca Trejo, Naturopath. Dr. Trejo is the three-time Diamond award winner for the Burlington Post Reader’s Choice as the Best Naturopath in Burlington. Once a year, Dr. Trejo makes the time to speak to our group about the liver, the gut and toxins in our environment. She loves to stay current with all of the new research and so we’re always learning so much! She shared a lot about the connections between gut health and brain health, and how many medical conditions may now stem from what is going on with the bacteria in our gut. It was truly fascinating and a lot of information to take in. Dr. Trejo works with Doctors Naturae in Burlington, 905-336-9721.

The evening ended with an introduction to the coach’s program, followed by many raffle items.
