30 Day Whole Body Detox 2014 – Day 27

A little wrinkle in my last few days of the 30 Day Whole Body Detox – I spent a few hours this morning in the Emergency Room for an infection in my toe. I won’t get into all of the details but the antibiotic treatment I started a week ago wasn’t working (after trying to heal the infection naturally). There are certainly times when medicine is our friend and I am very grateful for antibiotics in this case. A round of IV antibiotics and everything should be all clear. This also means a lot of probiotics for me as well. The good thing is that I have been taking really good care of myself so my body is working optimally to fight the infection. This is also the reason why I haven’t been able to do much exercise during the 30 days.

forks over knivesAs I was up very early this morning, I ended up taking most of the day off and resting. It gave me the opportunity to watch a documentary that I had not seen before, Forks over Knives, ‘Prevent and Reverse Disease with a Whole Food, Plant Based Diet’. I’m sure many of you have seen it before and I don’t know how I missed it.  It is an excellent documentary that makes a great case for a plant based lifestyle. I have been a vegetarian since I was 16 years old and have been getting closer to a totally plant based diet over the past year or so. I was inspired by the great food from Lettuce Love Café and the amazing treats from Kelly’s Bake Shoppe, both are gluten-free and vegan. I know this might not be the popular opinion but I am really starting to wonder if we do need to eat animals to live, as a society. It’s a bit of a vicious circle that involves marketing, farm subsidies, lifestyle habits and behavioral patterns. Some of the dietary choices we have made for our daughter aren’t very popular either (she doesn’t drink milk or eat gluten) but I am confident in my research on the topic, and we know that she is eating a very healthy and varied diet compared to what many three year olds are eating.

Lots of veggies! This year, we offered a vegan option for the first time. If you wanted to give a plant based lifestyle a try for 30 days, with amazing food and recipes to go along with it, you could certainly give it a try! It’s the beginning of an awareness of how our food choices impact the planet we live on. Why not have a smaller environmental  footprint for a month?
